The Rotary Club of Myrtle Beach celebrated
their 65th Birthday celebration at the Oct 17th's weekly luncheon, hosted by
Past President John Leiter. The event was filled with fun, fellowship and
good food, along with "a little bit of Rotary"! David Michaux
escorted the spouses of a couple of our deceased Club members and Honored
Rotarians to the party. President Gary opened the meeting with a toast to the
65 years of "Service-Above-Self" through involvement with community
and international programs.
Balloons, party hats and favors were
available on tables and anyone wanting to address the group during the party
had to wear a "birthday hat" to make their address. Dr. Tom
Whitaker also was celebrating his 67th birthday, so thru the direction of Kenny
Pruett we all broke out in a fine chorus of "Happy Birthday". Tom
gave us all a little "birthday dance" and Bill Eagan played the
birthday song on the keyboard.
We celebrated many different opportunities
of what Rotary meant to a variety of members … 100% participation of some club
members; awarded five Paul Harris Fellows to deserving Rotarians; received an
Interact Club update (50 Academy of the Arts, Science and Technology students
have joined the club this year!); in honor of the Club's 65th birthday, President
Gary indicated he had submitted the club as a 100% Paul Harris Club, adding 23
new Paul Harris participants before the end of October; and once certified, our
Club will join the ranks of other clubs in District 7770 with that distinction.
We laughed and joked. We heard some
testimony about distinguished Rotarians and club members of the past, honored
some club members of today, and discussed our hopes of club members into the
future. We celebrated the fact that we were "net plus
five" in club membership on this day of celebration.
To conclude the celebration, President Gary
presented each club member with the Club's Challenge Coin as a birthday gift
for each member. The coin has a picture of Paul Harris on the front with
Rotary's life blood the "Four Way Test" on the back of the coin.
What a fun day at Rotary… fulfilling Lambo
Swartz's edict of Rotary is all about a "little bit of Rotary and a whole
lot of fun"!
