On September 19th approximately two dozen Rotarians meet at "first bell" in the auditorium of Myrtle Beach Elementary School to present Rotary Dictionaries to the 350 students making up this year's 3rd Grade Classes. It was an early morning filled with joy and excitement for both the students and the Rotarians.
After a few words from the Principle, Dr. Christy, and some comments by several of the Rotarians to the group of students, we passed out the Dictionaries. For some of these students, this Dictionary might be the only book of their own. The students searched the various types of information now available at their fingertips for use in their school work throughout the year. They were amazed at the variety of information … the longest word in the world which took up a whole page; list of Presidents and when they served; maps and statistics of the world and state; not to mention the correct spelling of thousands of words; and how each word should be pronounced. You could see the joy in their eyes and hear the conversations about how they were going to use the book.
For the Rotarians, it was a morning filled with personal interactions with the students … interactions of laughter, hope and appreciation from this group of young but future leaders of our community. We had a chance to shake each and every students hand and hear them express their words of "thank you". The real fun will come from reading the many letters of thank you, which I am sure they will send to our club members, as they have done each and every year that we provided these dictionaries to the students.
It is amazing how just one book can offer so much to so many! This is one of our best Rotary projects each year.
